What is a birth chart?

A birth chart — or natal chart — is a “photograph” of the sky at the very minute you came into the world. It's a circular diagram that shows which sign and which house the Sun, the Moon and the planets occupied in that moment. In astrology this chart is seen as the symbolic language of your character, your strengths and the central themes of your life.

An accurate chart needs three things: your date of birth, your time of birth (as precise as possible) and your place of birth. When the time is unknown, the calculation of the houses shifts — which is exactly why astrologers treat the hour of birth as so important.

The first layer is the planets: they answer the question “what?”. The Sun embodies your essence, the Moon your emotions, Mercury your way of thinking, Venus your language of love, Mars your energy.

The second layer is the zodiac signs: they answer the question “how?”. The very same planet steps on stage in a completely different “costume” in Aries than it does in Pisces.

The third layer is the houses: they answer the question “where?”. The twelve houses are the areas of life: the first house is your personality, the fourth your family and roots, the seventh your relationships, the tenth your career.

A birth chart, though, is the whole book: your Moon sign reveals your inner world, while your rising sign (the Ascendant) shows the first impression you make on people.
